I bought this AVR to replace my Harman Kardon AVR. truthfully the HK sounded better and had a better GUI for setup and menu. The Marantz Graphic User Interface (GUI) is somewhat complicated and had a lot of unfamiliar terms. It also appears reminiscent of a computer DOS screen on Windows 3.1. I will never use the HEOS section of it: it will only see duty for the TV sound system. Sound is OK, fairly clear and I love the enhanced HDMI ARC feature and the phono input. The feature for sound compression between the loudest and softest noise is great so you don’t have to crank up the volume for soft conversations then run it back down when there are explosions on screen. This amp runs much cooler then the old Harman unit. I think Marantz could have improved the distortion specs on the back channels. This is where the HK is missed because the sound was perfectly transparent. Unfortunately Harman doesn’t make AVRs anymore. sad. I’ll miss their products. The Marantz is built well, so I expect years of high quality sound from it. Only time will tell if it lasts as long as the HK. I expect 15+ years of service from any solid state device so I’ll have to update my review in ten years.

This product has met our needs and until we have used the product more, the overall quality is yet to be seen and heard. I grew up in the 1970’s and Marantz was one of only a few top brands to buy then. I am in very high hopes that the Marantz of today will pan out to be just as good as back then.
There is one issue I do not like of this product that seems to be the trend of today. This product, along with 3 other Marantz products I have purchased from other providers, does NOT come with any consumer instructions or installation paperwork as it did back some time ago. It does come with an 800 number for questions but a few pages of helpful guidance wouldn’t break the bank to include !!
